Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster put his dangerous game on full display this week when he attempted the “Milk Crate Challenge”, a viral video stunt that has since gone horribly wrong. The video shows someone sitting on top of an upright milk crate, then jumping off the crate into the air wearing only underwear. As the person falls, the milk crate slowly tips over backwards, causing the person to fall close to (but not actually) his head. The stunt is dangerous, and it turns out that the person who tried it was not even wearing underwear.
Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster has been in the news for being a bad sport lately. Smith-Schuster got into a verbal altercation with a reporter after scoring a touchdown in the Steelers’ Week 9 win over the Bengals.
The Steelers receiver has been one of the team’s most promising players since coming up through the minors, but it keeps getting more difficult for him. Since his breakout season in 2015, he has accumulated plenty of accolades, including a Pro Bowler nod in 2017, and an All-Pro appearance last year. He is now preparing to enter his fifth season in the NFL, and with that comes more responsibility.
JuJu Smith-Schuster isn’t your average NFL wide receiver.
When he isn’t breaking ankles and collecting touchdown passes for the Pittsburgh Steelers, he can be seen doing TikTok dancing routines in front of a camera, taking out a whole lobby in Call of Duty, or attempting the next viral fad. Smith-Schuster has gotten a lot of flak in recent years for his off-the-field antics, and his newest attempt at completing the hazardous viral challenge that’s sweeping the internet shows he still has a long way to go.
JuJu Smith-antics Schuster’s have made him a target.
To obtain their NFL material, the younger generation of football fans has turned toward popular applications like TikTok. Smith-Schuster, who is just 24, is a member of that group, and he enjoys keeping his fans involved with weekly unique videos.
He established a practice of filming a TikTok dance before every game last season and posting it online for his followers to watch. Later in the year, when Smith-video Schuster’s of him dancing on the Buffalo Bills logo at midfield went viral, this created an issue. “That cranks you up a little bit, gives you a second itch to play with some more fire,” Bills safety Jordan Poyer said after the game.
That’s precisely what Buffalo accomplished on their way to a 26-15 win.
Despite having a large bullseye on his and his team’s backs, Smith-Schuster did the same thing on the Cincinnati Bengals logo the next week. That game was also lost by the Steelers.
The flashy WR, on the other hand, isn’t going to alter his demeanor because of a couple defeats.
Last season, Smith-Schuster said, “I’m not going to stop being myself.” “I’m going to be the JuJu I was when I was born. Authentic. TikTok is a new platform that I’ve utilized to connect with and build my audience. This is something I’ve been doing since the midpoint of the season. I also put that on the Cowboys logo, so it’s not only (the Bills’) logo. And I want to keep doing it. I’m simply having a good time and being myself.”
Smith-Schuster tries the perilous milk box challenge in an irrational manner.
If you’ve been living under a rock or just don’t care for social media (who could blame you? ), the milk crate challenge is the newest viral phenomenon sweeping the internet.
People basically build a set of stairs out of milk crates piled on top of each other. You win the challenge if you make it all the way to the peak and back down the other side. Isn’t it simple enough?
Wrong.
The tallest milk crate stacks are very unstable, and anybody who falls from the top level never lands gently. Take a look at some of the mayhem for yourself:
People trying the challenge have been said to have suffered so many injuries that TikTok temporarily suspended the trend over the weekend. So, two weeks before the Steelers’ 2021 season begins, it seemed like the ideal moment for Smith-Schuster to take up the task.
Smith-Schuster, thankfully for him and the Steelers, got it through without incident. Consider what would happen if he fell from the top level and had an injury. JuJu, you struck it rich this time.
It’s beyond JuJu’s time to mature.

It’s one thing to dance on an opponent’s logo in front of the camera, but putting your health and career with the Steelers on the line to attempt a hazardous viral challenge is a step too far for the gifted wide receiver.
Smith-Schuster just inked a one-year, $8 million contract extension with the Steelers that would keep him with the team until 2021. What if he injured his arm doing the milk crate challenge and had to sit out the rest of the season? After something like that, who in their right mind would sign him to another contract?
Playing in the NFL isn’t simply a pastime that Smith-Schuster can brag about to his millions of fans. It’s a job, albeit a high-stakes, very well-paying one.
It’s OK to have a good time on the field and celebrate major plays in front of the camera. That is the essence of football. But when you start jeopardizing your job for a few clicks, you know you’ve gone too far.
